Calypso Alina Halpin or just Calypso, is the posthumous main antagonist of The Day of Reckoning. She is an old, powerful, and magical oracle and Odium's adoptive mother figure and supposed mentor who tricked him into going after the Mane Six and their friends, especially Starlight and Discord, after she showed him their worst misdeeds throughout the series and before she trained, planned, and studied with him before her inevitable death of old age.

Appearance[]

Calypso is an old, bipedal, cream-colored lynx with dark-gray tufts and ends of fur in her ears. She also has medium-long, white-gray hair hidden under her cloak, hazel eyes with each having a single small eyelash, and pink nose. She has white-gray eyebrows, retractable claws on her paws, and visible wrinkles around her eyes, mouth and neck. She also has small fangs and a medium-short, cream, spiky tail.

For her attire, she wears a dark purple, hooded, torn and scratched-up cloak that was being held around her neck by a small golden plate that’s shaped like an eye.

Personality[]

On the outside, Calypso seems to have most of the traits of a wise sage/old lady. Being portrayed as approachable, calm, and sympathetic, if a little overly critical and stern when questioned as shown when first meeting Odium and taking him in.

However, most of that was just a facade to her true nature, which is a vindictive, manipulative, and opportunistic woman who is willing to use whatever the situation has to get what she wants. At first, she was a relatively helpful lady during her time as her home country's seer, but she also displayed a very dogmatic demeanor when it came to villain reformations throughout the series and was determined to do anything to change them in the future, even if it meant going against others and the law, which caused her eventual exile and being erased from history entirely.

During her time in her newfound cave, while she did retain her usually calm and serious nature, she became very vengeful and wanted those who had wronged both her and possibly others to pay, especially the Mane Six and their friends for indirectly causing her exile. She's also very deceitful and able to carefully use the emotions and motives of others to her advantage in a subtle manner, which is how she was able to manipulate Odium into thinking that the group was evil.

Calypso also has very little regard for her own well-being. While she doesn't like her own death due to how painful it is, she initially didn't care since she would probably die anyway due to her crimes and the benefits it had for her long-term plan.

Despite her nature, she is genuinely humble, intelligent, and has great foresight, often taking the strengths of others into account. Like Odium, she knows that the Mane Six and their friends' greatest strength is their teamwork and bases her plan around that. This is one of the reasons why she trained Odium for years before her death, even if she knew that he would probably lose or even get killed in the process.

Also, like Odium, Calypso sees things from a more moralistic standpoint, albeit more rationally. She focuses more on the morals of others rather than any surface-level aspects. This is one of the reasons why she hated the way the villains were reformed. Yet, she is also very hypocritical as she's ironically trying to accomplish similar crimes in order to stop them. She also did genuinely care about Odium and wanted him to help others and be a good person like she wanted before revenge consumed her because she saw a bit of herself in them and knows that it's too late for her. In fact, the reason why she accepted her death was because she didn’t like what she's become, deep down, and doesn't deserve to even live after everything that's happened. She also genuinely wished for Odium to have a brighter future than her own despite her actions and behavior. She also gained intense guilt and self-hatred for forcibly separating him from his real family due to being conflicted by both her morals and her strong desire for revenge and justice, which could be one of the reasons for her acceptance of her own death.

Overall, despite some of her good traits, Calypso is a spiteful, cunning, and somewhat uncaring seer who will do whatever it takes to make her goals happen, even at the expense of herself and/or others.

History[]

Many years back before the series on the other side of the planet, Calypso was both the fortune-teller and weapons-crafter to the previous rulers and citizens of her old country due to her incredible knowledge of the future and magical weaponry that she got from her parents, who were a very powerful seer and a magical blacksmith/war hero respectively. She would be able to inform others of possible future events, including any possible wars and catastrophes, as well as create appropriate weapons to help them prepare for said wars when needed.

However, while searching through the possible futures out of curiosity for herself, she stumbled upon some of the events from the series that showed every previous villains' fates at the hooves of the Mane Six and their friends, up to and including the events from the Ending of the End. She became disgusted at how most of them were redeemed despite them not deserving it for their catastrophic actions towards not only Equestria, but the entire planet. She was especially appalled by Starlight and Discord's redemptions due to committing the most heinous crimes.

Wanting to find a way to change these futures, Calypso sneaked off to the previous rulers' place where she tried to steal one of the scrolls in order to go forward in time. Unfortunately, she was caught by the authorities, exiled from her country, and erased from history for treason, attempted theft, and almost messing with time itself for questionable ends.

However, during her exile, she brought all her things with her, including her crystal ball, and waited in another, far away country for her to find someone else to take her revenge. However, no one seemed willing or capable enough to help her until she found and adopted a baby wolf that mysteriously showed up on her cave entrance, seeing the potential he had for her plans. She even regrettably separated him from his real family after they failed to find them.

While she did her typical motherly things of raising, feeding, and clothing him, she also subtly abused, groomed, and brainwashed him in an emotional and psychological way without him knowing under the guise of a kind and caring mother figure and mentor. She also trained him into becoming a strong and determined figure who was destined to help others and make the world a better place out of the genuine kindness of his own heart, something that she genuinely wanted to do despite her horrible actions. She also punished him with extremely brutal moral criticism and more frequent and harder training in order to keep him in line through tough love and isolates him in order to secure his safety. She even made him promise not to tell anyone about her and to not hurt anybody else out of both suspicion and moral standards respectively.

As he got older, she showed him visions of the Mane Six and their friends' crimes and horrible behaviors to cement his hatred of the group and his desire to take them down for others. After he turned 27, she finally said that he was ready and gave him one of her weapons before suddenly and painfully dying and turning into dust right in front of him, traumatizing him in the process before he headed out on his mission alone.

Powers and Abilities[]

  • Precognition: Due to her crystal ball, Calypso is able to see and show future events before they happen. She got it from her mother.
  • Power Weaponry: Due to her long history, Calypso has a huge assortment of weapons at her disposal, each with their own individual powers. One of her best ones is her long, wooden, magic-proof bo-staff that she gave to Odium before her inevitable death. She got it from both her mother and father combined.
  • Tactical Analysis: Calypso is a very tactical strategist who was able to trick Odium into joining her and helped him create a great plan against the Mane Six and their friends by studying their strengths, weaknesses, and pet peeves before her eventual death.
  • Teaching Intuition: She is able to teach Odium about how to use cunning, martial arts, and skill in order to make sure that he's ready to face the Mane Six and their friends on his own before her eventual death of old-age. She got both it and weapons usage from her father.
  • Longevity: Calypso has a very long lifespan, living for possibly thousands of years before her eventual death of old-age.
  • Manipulation: Using her subtle tactics, long lifespan, precognition, and affable demeanor, Calypso is able to manipulate the emotions and motives of others into getting them to do what she's wants. Despite her twisting it, she is very convincing when showing the truth to others and knows that a complete lie will only lead to disaster. She's also willing to play the long game if it meant furthering her goals, even if it leads to her death of old-age.

Weaknesses[]

  • Despite living for possibly centuries, she can still die from old-age and turn into dust. The entire process is very painful to go through and to watch from within sight.
  • While Calypso can see, show, and alter visions of the future, but she doesn't have the power to physically change them herself.
  • All of her weapons have their own individual weaknesses. For example, her magic-proof bo-staff isn't impervious to normal fire. Plus, none of them are indestructible.
  • Calypso is not allowed to see her own future or the future(s) of those related to her.

Trivia[]

  • Calypso is arguably the only villain in the series to completely get away with her crimes due to her death before anyone else found out about her true motives.
    • She's also the only one to do so without being redeemed.
    • Ironic for both her and Odium, since they both wanted to stop other antagonists (perceived or not) from getting away with their own crimes.
