Pony Species and Viable Hybrids

Warning: discusses only heterosexual relationships and is currently exclusive of non-biological pairings. If your OCs can spawn foals from non-heterosexual relationships, they will not be included in the canon for this project.

Hi, Rueful here! This page is obviously non-canonical, but it is derivative of real-world equine hybridization. If you want to sound particularly intelligent about what species your hybrid pony fan characters are, consider this guide. Here is an upcoming guide to classifying and categorizing characters who are hybrids of different species.

Which Pony Species Exist?

Let's talk pony species. Here is the current list of canonical non-hybridized ponies, but you are free to think of your own fanon species of equines as members as well.

Which are Viable With Each Other?

Immediately judging from the canon way in which breezies evolved separately from other equines due to having their origins in a different dimension, it is highly possible that the difference between the haploid numbers of them and the rest are too different to permit hybridization. Breezies might not even have genetic code, for all we know! Unless magic can create hybrids, it should be impossible for them to even reproduce with a pony-turned breezie by species-changing magic.

Also, abada have a very different skeletal structure from the other equines. They do appear to be of a similar lineage to kelpies (concluded from geographic closeness) and kirins (concluded from horn style), but their spindly proportions are probably a result of making themselves so genetically distinct from every other equine species that they cannot hybridize.

Zebras, kirin, and kelpies have a geographical homeland too far away from the water, so they cannot breed with mermares and orcaponies. Batponies can only breed with any of the main members of pony tribes or with real equines.

Some ponies and equines may be viable to interbreed with only some of the others. Changelings have been asexually generated from a tree in the comics (oops, spoiler), but they should have sufficient innate magic to reproduce with Shadow Ponies and Umbrum, which are equally as cursed in origin and probably possess enough magic to willingly birth a Changeling-Shadow Pony hybrid (whose hybrid name I will reveal later!).

Say that everypony else can create viable offspring with each other. Given some calculation, I have found about 34 viable hybrids between "purebred" parents. However, some of these hybridizations are called differently based on the biological sex of each parent, which might increase the different hybridizations. To keep this as simple as I will make it, I will not discuss hybridizations between one purebred and one hybrid or multiple hybrids, because at that point the resulting equine foal is so eugenically neglected that they might not have the ability to reproduce. Sorry to say that, but it is a true thing for mules.

Pony x Shadow Pony	Shade Pony	A pony with less corrupting magic than a Shadow pony, and it retains corporeal form at all times.
Pony x Seapony/Hippogriff	Hippocampus (in aquatic form)/Winglet (in aerial form)	A pony with all four legs and a betta fish tail in its aquatic form, definitely has wings and also has a yellow muzzle in its aerial form.
Pony Sperm x Mermare Egg (NOTE: Merstallions do not exist)	Ichthypony	A pony with fins only fit for swimming. They often do not have the ability to use them on land unless they have prosthetics.
Pony x Orcapony	Cetahoof	A black-and-white quadruped equine with a thick, blubbery whale tail.
Pony x Kelpie	Mysteral	A usually blue-coated pony with jagged pelt patterns. They have slightly long eyelashes and dark sclerae.
Zebra Egg x Donkey Sperm	Donkeyoid	Looks just like a Przewalski's horse or tarpan with a thinner coat and faded stripes.
Zebra Sperm x Donkey Egg	Zonkey	Looks just like a real-life zonkey.
Zebra x Batpony	Zebat (pronounced with a long e)	A stripe-laden equine with small bat wings; for most zebats, they are nonfunctional.
Zebra x Kirin	Zebrin (again, pronounced with a long e)	A stripe-laden equine with a short, two-pronged horn and scales.
Zebra x Shadow Pony	Shade Zebra	An especially dark-striped equine that cannot enter the Shadow Pony's shadow form.
Zebra x Seaponies/Hippogriffs	Zebragriff	Cannot access an aquatic form, but they are always born with wings that might be nonfunctional. The muzzle of the foal can range in color from mustard yellow to yerba mate.
Zebra x Kelpie	Oasikin	A usually blue-coated, heavily patterned equine with straight and sometimes matted mane hair.
Donkey Egg x Batpony Sperm	Batjack	Only biologically male foals.
Donkey Sperm x Batpony Egg	Batjenny	Only biologically female foals.
Donkey x Kirin	Donkirin	Cannot reproduce.
Donkey x Shadow Pony	Shade Donkey	A fully corporeal equine with darker-colored coats than donkeys.
Donkey x Seapony/Hippogriff	Seadonkey (in aquatic form)/Draft-Griff (in aerial form)	A donkey with a betta fish tail that can breathe underwater (in aquatic form). A winged, fluffier donkey with a bright muzzle (in aerial form).
Donkey Sperm x Mermare Egg	Ichthydonk	Another aquatic-only donkey-ish creature that needs prosthetics to walk. They, like ichthyponies, can still breathe air.
Donkey x Orcapony	Cetadonk	Tuxedo-coated donkeys with thick, whale tails.
Donkey x Kelpie	Kelpigaunt	A brown-coated equine with jagged tan patterns and long, black eyelashes.
Kirin x Shadow Pony	Qilin	While Kirins and Qilins in the Southeast Asian mythos are basically the same, qilins have darker coat patterns and more curvy horns and are therefore much more different.
Kirin x Kelpie	Rainpony	A blue-coated equine with equal parts of both parents.
Changeling KING Sperm x Umbrum QUEEN Egg (only kings of changelings and queens of umbra can reproduce together)	Silkling	A worker, soldier, or royal that usually serves a changeling hive. They are thinner, taller, and more sleek than changelings.
